Just having fun with hair, nails and make-up.

franticcurls:

Went to the mall today and put on a cap because my hair was in cornrows (to prevent it from getting frizzy; straightened it), no earrings. I looked like a boy. And whilst there I was thinking about how I would NEVER go out looking like that in Ghana, even if I was going to the mall for 3 minutes to buy just a pair of scissors. Because the chances that I would see someone I know are extremely high (since everyone in Accra goes there :/ -_-). That made me think about myself..

I care about how I look on a general basis, but not too much. I don’t have a standard (or if I do, it’s not too high lol)

That being said, it’s amazing how much power weaves possess these days. I think they are great and convenient etc, but I see how our perception of beauty is being defined every single day, thanks to Facebook. It’s a particular look. And while it’s fun etc, there are surely some effects:

There is almost a lack of variety amongst women in terms of what they look like. Go to ANY concert/event and you will find that almost every woman has a weave, with a mini dress and some stiletto heels. Very few women with natural/short hair or even different dress styles i.e if short dresses are in style, almost everyone there will be wearing some kind of short dress, just with like different patterns/accessories. Fashion and trends are great, but we hold on too tightly to what is “in style”.

A little more diversity would be great.

That being said, I realize how many people in America treat their natural hair like it’s some prize they won and use all sorts of treatments and stuff. I have never been so tender with my hair.. Possibly because I’ve had it all my life and never took care of it that way. It’s tough to begin to use all these new products and make these great but complicated hairstyles. Laziness :/ But I really want to work with my hair in that way.

You got any thoughts on anything I’ve written, holla :)
