9 Different ways to style your own hair [natural/permed] (take a break from your weaves!)

Hi everyone!

So I recently started taking better care of my own hair (read more here) and so I have been experimenting with different protective hairstyles & trying different things everyday so I don’t get bored with my hair. It has been working pretty well & I hardly ever leave my hair down unless I’m wearing my clip in extensions. My go to hairstyle is a high high bun/ponytail. These hairstyles keep my ends protected as well so I just wanted to share a few of them just in case there is anyone out there who is as sick of weaves as I am/ is starting a new hair journey. My hair is permed but these styles will work for natural hair as well.

High Bun

This is my go to hairstyle, which works very well for day and night. This is usually what I do when I’m going out at night. I don’t put a sock bun in there but you can feel free to use one if you want the bun to be bigger or you feel like your hair isn’t thick enough.

Bun with scarf/hair band

I just brush some of my hair forward and then tie the rest of my hair in a messy bun (not so high). I don’t usually wear this hairstyle at night :/ it feels too day time to me. But it’s really simple and any triangular/long scarf will work. You can also substitute the scarf with a hair band of your choice.

High Pony (curly ends)

This is one of my favorite hairstyles to do. I curl my hair with flexi rods during the night, and when I wake up, I take out the flexi rods and finger comb my hair to the top and tie it. I just play around with the curls and pin down any curls which are out of place. This hairstyle is extremely low manipulation (no combs/brushes needed). If you don’t have flexi rods or cant be bothered to roll your hair before bed, you can just braid your hair (pigtails) before you go to bed. The curls will be a little different but will still work.

2 braids in the front

I just section off the front of my hair and do 2 french braids. I just catch the rest of my hair up and do a bun. Very very simple. The lighting isn’t great in the picture but I hope you get the point :/

1 twist in the front

This is similar to the one with the two braids but I just do one fat flat twist to the side and pin it with the rest of the hair which is in a high bun. The night before, I curl my hair with flexi rods (this is not necessary but I just want some texture)

Pony with pouf

I gather all my front hair and pin them to create a little hump in the front.

Pouf

This is more dramatic than the above because the pouf is bigger. The rest of my hair is in a low bun.

Braid out

This is the product of braiding my damp hair into four cornrows (on wash day) before I go to bed. When I wake up I just take out the four braids and style :) no heat necessary. You can also achieve this look with bantu knots.

These hairstyles are really easy and quick and all you really need is bobby/hair pins. I like to curl my hair with flexi rods / braid them before bed so that the next day, even if I don’t feel like styling my hair I can just tie it into a high pony and it will still have some texture. Never a boring day :)

Hope you enjoy! I’m thinking about making videos for some of these styles but I feel like they are simple and don’t really need to explained. BUUuuuttt if anyone is interested in seeing a video on how I do any of these styles please let me know and I will be happy to make one.
